Traditional online PDF tools usually follow a simple model: upload your document, wait while a remote server processes it, download the result, and trust that everything in between happened exactly as promised.
For an ordinary brochure, that may feel harmless. For a law firm sending a confidential settlement agreement, an accountant working on financial statements or an HR consultant editing employment records, it introduces an unnecessary question: why should the document leave the device at all?
PDF Atelier is built around the opposite assumption. If an operation can safely and reliably happen inside your browser, that is where it should happen.

A simpler security principle
The safest unnecessary transfer is the one that never happens.
Security products often focus on what happens after information has been transmitted: encryption in transit, encrypted storage, retention policies, automatic deletion. All of those controls can be valuable.
But there is an even simpler question: did this document need to leave the device in the first place?
For many everyday PDF operations, the answer is no. PDF Atelier's local-first model reduces one of the most obvious exposures associated with online document processing: transferring the document to another infrastructure when the operation can run locally.
That does not make every possible security risk disappear. It does remove an entire processing step — and reducing unnecessary processing parties is one of the simplest principles in responsible information handling.
What local processing actually means
When a PDF Atelier tool is marked as locally processed, the document operation runs in your browser.

The actual document does not need to be sent to PDF Atelier's backend merely to perform that operation. The website can still make ordinary internet requests for things such as application code, authentication, subscription status, payments, updates and privacy-safe analytics. Those systems remain logically separate from the contents of your PDF.
Local-first is stronger than “upload and delete”
A common privacy promise from online document tools is: “your file is deleted after processing.” That can be a perfectly legitimate security measure.
But it still means the file had to be:
- transferred;
- received;
- processed;
- potentially held temporarily;
- then deleted.
PDF Atelier is designed around a different principle: where local processing is practical, there is no reason for the document-processing server copy to exist in the first place.
This distinction is particularly meaningful for professional users handling privileged, regulated or contractually confidential information.
Security is more than keeping the PDF local
PDFs are complex files. They can contain information the user does not immediately see:
- metadata
- embedded attachments
- JavaScript actions
- annotations
- form values
- OCR text layers
- objects outside the visible crop area
- cryptographic signatures
That is why PDF Atelier does not reduce security to a single lock icon. Different risks require different tools.
Sensitive information
A black rectangle is not redaction.
One of the most dangerous PDF mistakes is visually covering confidential text and assuming it has disappeared. In poorly implemented workflows, the original text can remain underneath the black rectangle and may still be searchable, copied or extracted.
PDF Atelier's Redact workflow is built around destructive removal of the affected underlying content in the exported result.
The goal is not to make information invisible. The goal is to remove the information being redacted.
Before exporting, you review the affected areas and the workflow states that redaction is intentionally destructive: redacted pages lose their selectable text layer, because the content is gone rather than covered.
Crop is not Redact
Cropping a page changes what the user sees. It does not necessarily remove the underlying information from the PDF: content outside the visible CropBox may still exist inside the document.
PDF Atelier therefore keeps Crop and Redact deliberately separate. Use Crop PDF to adjust page boundaries, and Redact PDF when information must actually be removed. That difference may sound technical. For confidential documents, it matters enormously.
Metadata can reveal more than the page
A document can display nothing suspicious and still contain author names, document titles, software information, keywords, internal project references and other metadata.

But metadata removal is still not the same thing as complete document sanitization.
Sanitize goes beyond metadata
A PDF may contain additional hidden or non-obvious structures. Depending on the document and supported inspection capability, PDF Atelier's Sanitize workflow can inspect categories such as metadata, XMP information, embedded files, JavaScript and actions, and non-visible document content.
The interface distinguishes between three honest outcomes:

The category was detected in this document.
Not found
The inspection did not detect that category.
Could not fully inspect
The structure could not be examined with confidence.
Responsible security software should acknowledge what it cannot prove. PDF Atelier deliberately does not use claims such as “100% sanitized” or “forensically clean”.
Safe Visual Copy
For particularly sensitive sharing situations, the Sanitize workflow offers a more destructive fallback: a visual copy of the document. This approach represents the visible pages rather than attempting to preserve every original PDF structure, which deliberately removes many hidden structures.
But it comes with trade-offs. Selectable text, forms, links, annotations, accessibility information and digital signatures may be lost or invalidated. A security feature should explain those losses instead of pretending they do not exist, so the mode states them before export.
Password protection happens locally
Password-protected PDFs should not require the password to be submitted to an unrelated remote processing service. Passwords used to open or protect documents are handled inside the local PDF processing workflow.
They never become analytics events or application logs.
Protection uses modern PDF encryption supported by the production engine. At the same time, PDF permissions are not marketed here as unbreakable digital-rights management.
A strong product explains both what a password protects and what it does not.
Signed PDFs require special care
Digital signatures are different from handwritten signatures placed visually on a page. A cryptographically signed PDF can contain certificate-based integrity information, and modifying the document can invalidate that signature.
PDF Atelier therefore treats signed-document indicators differently from ordinary PDFs. If an existing cryptographic signature is detected, you are warned before making modifications that may invalidate it. An empty signature field is not the same thing as an already signed document, and adding a visual signature is not the same thing as creating or validating a qualified cryptographic signature. PDF Atelier does not pretend otherwise.
Visual signing without misleading claims
The Sign tool places a visual signature or initials on a document when that is appropriate for your workflow. It should not be confused with certificate issuance, qualified electronic signatures, identity verification or PAdES validation — those are different services with different legal and technical requirements. For professional users, knowing the difference is part of security.
OCR without automatically sending scans away
Scanned PDFs are particularly sensitive because the entire visible document may exist only as page images. PDF Atelier's local-first OCR architecture recognises text without making remote OCR the default processing path: the recognition engine and its language models are loaded as application resources, while the scan itself stays on your device.
A searchable PDF can retain the visible scan while adding a text layer for search and selection. OCR is never perfect, so the workflow communicates recognition limitations rather than silently treating machine-recognised text as guaranteed truth.
Your PDF does not become your account data
Creating an account for billing or premium functionality should not mean creating a cloud document archive. PDF Atelier accounts are designed around subscriptions, entitlements, preferences and reusable workflow definitions.
The underlying documents do not need to become account-stored files merely because you signed in. A professional can buy a PDF Atelier plan without turning PDF Atelier into another document repository.
Security through data minimisation
A practical security principle is simple: do not collect information you do not need. PDF Atelier's architecture separates the document, the user's account, billing, product analytics and reusable workflow settings.
Document text, filenames, page images, OCR contents, signatures and passwords do not belong in product analytics. This reduces both exposure and complexity.

We would rather explain a limitation than make a false promise.
PDF Atelier avoids vague language such as “military-grade security”, “100% secure”, “unhackable”, “forensically clean” or “guaranteed anonymous”. Those phrases sound reassuring but say very little about what actually happens to a document. Instead, PDF Atelier aims to answer concrete questions:

- What exactly is removed by Redact?
- What does Crop leave behind?
- What metadata can be inspected?
- What happens to an existing digital signature?
- Does compression rasterize the file?
- Will a form remain editable?
- Can a hidden attachment remain?

Security becomes more useful when the answer is specific.
Local processing reduces risk. It does not replace good security practice.
