Combine PDFs without losing control of the final document

A useful PDF merger is more than a file concatenator. Before export, users should be able to see every source file, confirm its page count, drag files into the correct order and remove an accidental attachment. Merging should work at page level rather than by converting pages to images. That keeps the original page dimensions and visual quality intact. After the merge, PDF Atelier should offer direct continuation actions such as add page numbers, compress the merged PDF or password-protect the finished document without making the user reopen the file.

What this tool does and does not change

  • Preserved where the source file allows it: text, vectors, links, annotations, forms.
  • Document-level bookmarks/outlines of the source files are not carried across
  • Conflicting duplicate form field names may be renamed by the writer

Questions about Merge PDF

How do I merge multiple PDF files into one PDF?
Add two or more PDFs to the Merge PDF workspace, arrange the files in the order you want, remove any file that should not be included, and choose Merge PDFs. PDF Atelier creates a new combined file; the source PDFs on your device are not changed.
Can I change the order of the PDFs before I merge them?
Yes. Reordering is part of the merge step, not a separate cleanup job. Drag files into the correct sequence before export. On touch devices, the interface should also provide accessible move-up and move-down controls so reordering does not depend on precise drag gestures.
Does merging PDFs reduce image or text quality?
A page-level merge should not rasterize or recompress pages simply because they are being combined. Text remains text and existing images remain at their original resolution. If you want a smaller output file, use Compress PDF as a separate step so the quality trade-off is explicit.
What happens if the PDFs have different page sizes or orientations?
They can still be combined. A merged PDF may legitimately contain A4, Letter, landscape and portrait pages in the same document. PDF Atelier should preserve each page’s own dimensions unless you deliberately use a crop or page-normalization feature later.
Can I merge password-protected PDFs?
If a source PDF requires a password to open, PDF Atelier must ask for the correct password locally before it can read and merge that document. It should never attempt to bypass encryption. Permission-restricted PDFs may also limit what can legally or technically be done with them.
Will bookmarks, forms or document-level settings survive a merge?
Page appearance and page content should be preserved, but document-level structures can be more complex. Bookmarks, named destinations, form-field names, attachments and document metadata may conflict when several PDFs are combined. PDF Atelier should preserve what it can safely preserve and warn before export when a structure cannot be carried across reliably.
Are the PDFs uploaded to a server to be merged?
For the local Merge PDF tool, the file-processing step is designed to run in your browser. The files are read from your device, combined locally and exported back to your device. Ordinary web requests for the application, account or billing can still occur, but the PDF contents do not need to be sent to PDF Atelier for the merge itself.
