Remove PDF Metadata
Clean document properties that can reveal more than the page itself
PDF metadata can include title, author, subject, keywords, creator application, producer and creation/modification timestamps. Some files also contain XMP packets with additional descriptive information. The tool should show what it found before removing it so users understand what is being changed.

Remove PDF Metadata runs locally in this browser tab. Known limits: Document properties (title, author, subject, keywords, producer, creator, dates) are cleared · Scope is common document metadata only — embedded objects, hidden layers and attachments belong to Sanitize PDF
Metadata cleanup is not the same as full document sanitization. Comments, attachments, form values, hidden layers or visible content may contain sensitive information too. PDF Atelier should be precise about which structures it removes and suggest Redact PDF when page content itself needs to be deleted.
What this tool does and does not change
- Preserved where the source file allows it: text, vectors, links, annotations, forms.
- Document properties (title, author, subject, keywords, producer, creator, dates) are cleared
- Scope is common document metadata only — embedded objects, hidden layers and attachments belong to Sanitize PDF
Questions about Remove PDF Metadata
- What metadata can a PDF contain?
- Common fields include title, author, subject, keywords, creator application, PDF producer, creation date and modification date. A PDF can also contain XMP metadata with richer properties. The exact fields depend on the software that created or edited the document.
- Why should I remove PDF metadata before sharing a document?
- Metadata can reveal a person’s name, internal software, timestamps, document title or other context that is not visible on the page. Removing unnecessary properties is useful when publishing templates, sending client documents or preparing files for external disclosure.
- Does removing metadata delete comments, tracked changes or hidden text?
- Not automatically. Metadata fields are only one class of information. Comments, annotations, embedded files, layers, form values and hidden page content require separate inspection. PDF Atelier must not market metadata removal as a complete sanitization process unless those structures are explicitly handled.
- Does metadata removal change the visible PDF?
- Normally no. The goal is to change document-level properties while keeping the visible pages identical. The exported copy should be visually compared with the source during testing.
- Can metadata come back after I remove it?
- Yes. Opening and resaving the PDF in another application can create new producer, modification-date or author metadata. Metadata removal cleans the current copy; it cannot control what future software writes later.
- Can I see the metadata before deleting it?
- Yes. The tool should list detected fields and values first, then let the user remove all metadata or choose categories where technically appropriate. This creates transparency and prevents a “mystery clean” action.
- Can I remove metadata from many PDFs at once?
- Yes. This is an ideal Batch PDF operation. Each output should keep a predictable filename, report whether metadata was found and confirm that no input file was silently skipped.
