Optional PDF permission flags can restrict printing, copying or editing in compliant readers, but they are not equivalent to encryption and some software may ignore them. The page should explain this distinction clearly instead of promising unbreakable document control.

What does password-protecting a PDF actually do?
An open password encrypts the PDF so a reader needs the correct password to decrypt and display its contents. This is stronger than simply hiding a page or adding a “confidential” watermark because the file contents are encoded rather than left readable.
What is the difference between an open password and PDF permission restrictions?
An open password controls access to the document itself. Permission settings ask compatible PDF readers to restrict actions such as printing, copying or editing. Permission flags are useful but may be ignored by software that does not enforce them, so they should not be presented as absolute access control.
Which encryption should PDF Atelier use?
The implementation should use a well-supported PDF encryption method and test the output in Acrobat, Preview, major browsers and mobile readers. If AES-256 is offered, the UI should also explain compatibility and provide a more widely compatible option when necessary.
What happens if I forget the password?
PDF Atelier should not store or recover document passwords by default. If you lose the password, the protected output may become inaccessible. Keep an unprotected source in an appropriate secure location if your workflow requires recovery.
Can PDF Atelier remove a password from my PDF?
Only when the user supplies the current password and is authorized to modify the document. Removing known protection is a legitimate convenience feature; bypassing or cracking an unknown password is not part of the product.
Can a password stop someone from taking a screenshot?
No. Once an authorized recipient can see the document, software cannot guarantee that the content will never be captured, photographed or re-created. Password protection controls access to the encrypted file; it is not digital-rights management.
Is the password sent to PDF Atelier?
In the intended local encryption flow, the password and PDF processing stay on the user’s device and the password is not logged or stored. Production network tests must verify this behavior before the product makes the claim publicly.
