The preview must show every page that will receive a number. Existing printed numbers in the PDF are part of the original content and cannot be automatically understood as pagination, so PDF Atelier should warn when a new number may overlap visible page content.

Questions about Add Page Numbers

Can I start page numbering from page 2 or page 3?
Yes. Choose the first PDF page that should display a number, then choose the numeric value it should start with. For example, PDF page 3 can display “1” while the cover and contents page remain unnumbered.
Can I skip the cover page?
Yes. Skipping the first page or any defined front-matter range should be a standard option. The preview should make it obvious which pages will and will not receive numbering.
Can I put page numbers at the top, bottom, left or right?
Yes. Users should choose from common header and footer positions and fine-tune margins. The tool should prevent numbers from being placed outside the printable or visible page area.
What if the PDF already has page numbers?
Existing numbers are part of the page content and will not disappear automatically. You can place new numbers elsewhere, crop or cover old numbering for a cosmetic correction, or return to the source document if the original pagination needs to be rebuilt.
Can I use formats such as “Page 1 of 20”?
Yes. Page-number templates should support a plain number, “Page {n}”, and “Page {n} of {total}”. Roman numerals can be added as an advanced style if the implementation handles front matter and numbering transitions consistently.
Will adding page numbers change the quality of my PDF?
No. Page numbers are small text objects added to the existing pages. The document should not need to be rasterized or recompressed simply to add pagination.
Can I add page numbers after merging PDFs?
Yes, and that is usually the cleaner workflow. Merge the source documents first so the final page order and total page count are known, then add numbering to the complete document.
