People usually compress a PDF because a portal rejects the file, an email attachment is too large or a scanned document takes unnecessary storage. Text-heavy PDFs often compress differently from scanned or image-heavy PDFs. A lossless pass can remove structural waste without visibly changing the document, while stronger modes may downsample images. PDF Atelier should never imply that every PDF can be reduced to a specific target size without a quality cost.

Questions about Compress PDF

How can I reduce the size of a PDF without noticeably reducing quality?
Start with the lightest or lossless optimization mode. It can remove redundant objects and optimize internal structure without aggressively downsampling images. If the result is still too large, move to a balanced image-compression preset and compare the preview before export.
Can PDF Atelier compress a PDF to exactly 1 MB, 2 MB or 5 MB?
A target-size mode can aim for a limit, but an exact byte size cannot be guaranteed for every document. A 40-page scan full of photographs has very different compression potential from a text report. The tool should iterate toward the requested size and clearly report when reaching it would require unacceptable quality loss.
Why is my PDF so large?
The most common causes are high-resolution scanned images, embedded photographs, duplicated resources, unnecessary font data, large attachments or inefficiently generated content streams. The compression result should explain whether savings came mainly from image downsampling, structural optimization or both.
Will compressing a PDF make text blurry?
Selectable vector text normally remains sharp. Blurriness is more likely when a PDF page is itself a scanned image or when the tool rasterizes content. PDF Atelier should avoid rasterizing normal text pages and clearly label any mode that reduces image resolution.
Does compression remove searchable text or OCR?
A well-designed compression pass should preserve the PDF text layer, including OCR text associated with scanned pages, unless an extreme rasterization mode explicitly replaces page content. Searchability should be tested after export as part of the compression acceptance criteria.
Why does an already compressed PDF barely get smaller?
Some PDFs are already efficiently encoded. Recompressing them may save only a small amount, and forcing a dramatic reduction would require lowering image quality or resolution. PDF Atelier should show a “little additional saving is possible” message rather than pretending the operation failed.
Is PDF compression processed locally?
For the local compression modes, optimization is designed to run on your device. Large or complex documents can therefore be limited by browser memory and CPU performance. The interface should surface those limits honestly instead of silently uploading the file to a server.
