Questions about Flatten PDF
- What does it mean to flatten a PDF?
- Flattening converts selected interactive content, such as form fields or annotations, into fixed page appearance. The recipient sees the same visible result but can no longer edit those flattened elements as normal PDF controls.
- Does flattening make a PDF read-only?
- It can make specific form fields or annotations non-editable, but it is not the same as encryption, DRM or a guaranteed read-only format. Other PDF content may still be editable with capable software.
- What is the difference between flattening form fields and flattening the whole page?
- Field flattening converts only form appearances while preserving the rest of the PDF structure. Full-page flattening renders the entire page into a visual image, which can remove text selection, links, accessibility information and other interactive features.
- Will a flattened PDF still be searchable?
- A normal field-only flatten should preserve the document’s existing searchable text. A full-page raster flatten may remove the original text layer unless OCR is deliberately added afterward.
- Can flattening remove comments and annotations?
- If native annotation flattening is supported for the relevant annotation types, their visible appearance can be baked into the page. Unsupported annotations should be reported; PDF Atelier must not claim they were flattened when they were merely hidden.
- Will flattening invalidate a digital signature?
- It can. Modifying page content, form fields or annotations may invalidate an existing cryptographic signature or violate a certified PDF’s allowed-change policy. PDF Atelier should detect likely signed PDFs and warn before export.
- Should I flatten a form before sending it?
- It can be useful when you want the recipient to see the completed values exactly as submitted and not accidentally change them. Keep an editable source copy if you may need to revise the form later.
- Is flattening the same as sanitizing a PDF?
- No. Flattening changes editability/appearance. Sanitizing targets hidden document structures and privacy-related information. Use Sanitize PDF when the goal is safe sharing rather than finalizing fields.
