What is Bates numbering?
Bates numbering adds a unique sequential identifier to every included page, commonly using a prefix plus zero-padded number such as CASE-000001. Unlike ordinary page numbers, the sequence can continue across multiple separate PDF files.
Can Bates numbers continue across several PDFs?
Yes. Multi-file sequencing is the core professional use case. PDF Atelier should calculate the sequence from the chosen file order and show the first and last identifier before processing.
Can I choose a prefix, suffix and number of digits?
Yes. Prefix, starting number, zero padding and optional suffix should be configurable, with an immediate example preview such as ABC-000123-CONF.
What happens if I reorder the files?
The sequence changes. File order must be finalized before Bates numbering, and reordering after application requires regenerating the numbered output if the identifiers need to follow the new order.
Can I skip cover pages or selected pages?
Yes. Page exclusions/ranges should be explicit, and the first/last identifier preview must reflect the actual pages that will receive a number.
Is Bates numbering the same as adding page numbers?
No. Page numbering usually describes position within a document, such as Page 3 of 20. Bates numbering creates unique identifiers intended to remain stable across a larger document set.
Will Bates numbering invalidate a signed PDF?
Adding any visible page content changes the file and can invalidate an existing cryptographic signature. PDF Atelier should warn when signature indicators are detected.
Can I save a Bates numbering preset?
Plus users should be able to save non-sensitive settings such as prefix pattern, position, font size and margin. The next starting number should still be reviewed to prevent accidental duplicate sequences.
